NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - With another round of freezing temperatures overnight, snowplow crews warn about slush and ice on your morning commute.

Duane Marusarz with the city of North Kansas City said as Mother Nature melted a lot of the snow during the day on Tuesday, overnight is a different story.

“Everything that’s melted has a potential to re-freeze,” Marusarz said. “It can actually be a black ice situation, where it doesn’t look like it’s slippery, but it will be.”

As many school districts are back in session after days of cancellations, Marusarz said it’s important to know that many of the roads may be slushy and slick as you head out the door.

“Be very cautious and watch your speed, especially when you are coming to the thicker areas of slush on the road surface because that will pull you one way or another, and you can land in a ditch,” Marusarz said. “In that moment, if you do lose control, I would recommend that you let off the gas, hold the steering wheel steady, and keep it as straight as possible.”

Marusara said slick spots are not only going to be on the roads but under your feet, so take it slow getting out of your car or walking on the sidewalk.

“That’s when you can have a lot of slips and falls, and people can get hurt,” Marusarz said.

As for Kansas City, City Manager Brian Platt emphasizes the same message.

“Even though we’ve done a lot to pre-treat our roads, there’s still going to be some slick spots,” Platt said.

Platt said their crews are also going to be out around the clock preparing the roads for the morning commute.

“It’s just going to be a long battle for us; we hope people can report any issues that they see through the myKCMO app; you can or also call 311,” Platt said. “My tomorrow morning, our commute should be fairly safe.”
