KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The KC Pet Project is in a crisis mode as they try to save animals still being brought in for help due to the cold weather.

Tori Fugate with KC Pet Project said the bottom line; it’s heartbreaking, and they’re swamped.

“Every day has just been a hustle, basically,” Fugate said. “We have seen so many animals coming in because of the cold; we’ve seen a lot of animals not leaving because of the cold. Adoptions have slowed, and people aren’t getting out of their houses as much.”

The most recent dog rescued from the cold is Horton, who was found almost frozen to death.

“It was an eviction case, where they received a call that said there were two dogs in the home; one was already dead,” Fugate said.

The staff rushed him in and said the thermostat wouldn’t even pick up how cold he was.

“There was absolutely no sign of life with this dog whenever he came in, except that he had a heartbeat,” Fugate said.

The staff documented trying to save his life; in the video, you can see them trying to warm him up by using blow dryers.

“We were encouraging him, hold on, you keep holding on, trying to get him to come back around, and by the end of the day, he was able to eat on his own,” Fugate said.

Unfortunately, Horton is just one of the hundreds of animals that have frozen this winter.

Fugate said since the cold spell, 40 to 60 animals have been dropped off every day.

“It’s got us in this situation where animals coming in through animal services, and people that are bringing in animals to us has just put us into a crisis that we have no open kennels for space,” Fugate said.

If you’d like to help, they are extending their adoption deals due to this crisis. You can find that information on their website.
