LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) - What started as a fun, exciting day in Lawrence quickly turned into a sad Saturday. The No. 4 seed KU men’s basketball team was upset in blowout fashion by 5-seed Gonzaga 89-68.

The loss knocked the Jayhawks out of the NCAA tournament and ended their season.

“First half, I had a little bit of hope. The second half crushed my hope a little bit,” said one KU student after the loss.

“I was biting my fingernails for a good chunk, then I stopped biting them because it was clear [KU was going to lose],” added another student.

While KU fans were sad about the result, many told KCTV5 it was not unexpected.

“I think we’ve got seven guys, and we can compete for a half, but when you’ve only got seven guys, you are not going to play a full game,” said KU student Cameron Kersey. “It’s not going to happen.”

“If I were Bill Self, I would be really disappointed,” added a different student. “I’d probably say some words I can’t say on TV.”

Despite the men’s team losing, Jayhawk fans were pumped that KU’s women’s team picked up an overtime victory against Michigan to advance to the second round of the women’s NCAA tournament.

“I can’t name a single player on that team, but I’m pumped that they are winning,” said Kersey.

“I’m really excited about it. The KU women, God bless them,” Brown said.
