KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - The Turner Boxing Club is known around the country for its boxing prominence and one young man from Kansas City is taking his next step in his pursuit of excellence.

Marco Romero, who won his division of the National Golden Gloves tournament in May, made a huge decision.

“I’m finally starting that journey of going professional,” Romero told KCTV5.

His coach, John Brown, has taught thousands of local kids to box but has avoided handling pro fighters.

“I’ve only (taught) one other professional,” Brown said. “That was Tommy Morrison.”

Morrison won the heavyweight championship and performed in Rocky V.

“I thought I could make him wealthy and keep him healthy,” Brown said of Morrison.

Morrison’s career came to an unfortunate conclusion but Brown feels better about Romero.

“Marco’s different,” Brown explained. “He’s got all the skills, he’s got all the natural ability. He’s been boxing for 10 years and he’s had over 130 fights.”

But beyond the boxing talent, it’s something else that impresses his coach.

“He’s proved himself to have the right stuff in the ring and I think he has the right stuff out of the ring. He’s got the work ethic, he’s got the integrity.”

The 18-year-old is seen as a risking star on the American boxing scene, but he takes a simple approach.

“World champions are made in the gym,” Romero said. “That’s what I believe, so just stay in the gym, stay focused, stay consistent, stay dedicated to the sport.”

Romero’s father has been with him every step of the way and loves his decision to go pro. His mom is just a bit more hesitant.

“My mom’s not the most excited one, but she’s really excited to see me fulfill my dreams of turning professional.”

Brown says Marco is ready, noting the 21 national titles he’s won. Romero says his goal is simple.

“One day you’ll see me at the MGM Grand with a World Championship belt,” Romero claims.

And his coach believes he has the makeup and ability to make that happen.

“Well, he’s the best I’ve ever had,” Brown said.

Romero begins his professional career this weekend in Maine. He’s not putting all his eggs in one basket, saying he’ll continue his studies as he boxes professionally.
