KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Stores across Missouri are helping people wrap up their back-to-school shopping with the hopes of a lesser checkout price for this year’s no-sales tax initiative.

The Back to School Sales Tax Weekend Holiday started at 12:01 on Friday, August 2, and ends at midnight on Sunday.

Families are checking off their list of back-to-school clothing, supplies, computer equipment, calculators, and plenty more. This weekend is meant to help families save some cash to help with other needs sure to arise.

Jamie Rhoden is the store manager at the Walmart Supercenter in Raytown off Highway 350 and he encourages families to come sooner than later.

“Take advantage of the savings that you’re going to get and come out now while supplies are here, and we can get everything you need for back to school,” he said. “I would get here as quickly as you can to take advantage because Saturday and Sunday -- it will be crazy.”

Jason Bisges is the Target Store Director in Liberty where he is seeing more people coming in Friday morning. It’s busier than usual, which is expected, but he wants to make sure they have staffing situated to help out when needed.

“We’ve obviously seen a lot of traffic already, which we typically see with back to school, but this is kind of that really big weekend for us as a retailer,” he said.

State and local sales tax will not be charged for:

  • Clothing and footwear priced under $100 per item
  • School supplies up to $50 per purchase
  • Calculators under $150
  • Computers under $1,500
  • Computer equipment like microphones, printers, and computer software under $350

The Missouri Department of Revenue’s website has lists and more facts available to ensure the items you want are on the checklist.

“I think it’s cool that the state of Missouri offers that and it’s anything that we can do to put a little bit of money back into those consumer’s pockets,” said Bisges.

Many stores, like Target and Walmart, offer website orders which can be a way to get out of the aisle. Either way, it’s a busy weekend ahead.

“We’re replenishing every day so that’s that piece of behind-the-scenes that the guests don’t have access to but doing everything we can to present a brand-new and ready store every morning for our guests,” said Bisges.
