Raytown School District takes steps to manage AI-use in classes

RAYTOWN, Mo. (KCTV) - School districts are navigating a new world when it comes to technology and the use of artificial intelligence in education.

Leaders in the Raytown School District are taking steps to address the best way to use AI in the classroom.

Monday evening, the Raytown Quality Schools Board of Education approved a plan to allow the superintendent to designate a district AI coordinator.

That person will be responsible for deg the district’s AI policy and identifying appropriate ways for it to be used within the district, according to board .

The AI coordinator is expected to talk to employees, students, teachers, families, and leaders to create an appropriate policy that everyone in the district will be responsible for following.

After the policy is created and in place, the AI coordinator will be responsible for monitoring and adjusting AI use in the district, according to documents the board approved.

“The purpose of the AI Use Plan is to protect the safety and security of students, employees, and the district while allowing for appropriate educational and productive enhancements enabled by AI. AI ma be used by employees and students only in accordance with the AI Use Plan,” according to ing board documents.

The AI policy will eventually be reviewed at least once a year. Employees and students will be allowed to submit requests for the plan to be adjusted.

The district is also required to train all employees and students on the requirements of this policy, and others regarding data management and privacy, and acceptable uses of AI, according to the policy board approved.

Once created, the AI policy will apply to all students and employees, regardless of whether the use happens on campus or at home.

The school board warns anyone who violates the AI policy may be disciplines or fired.
