Kansas City Public School students head back to class
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - It’s back-to-school week for schools across Missouri and Kansas City Public School students are some of the first to head back.
At Central High School, the annual appearance of Chiefs cheerleaders and Rumble band continued. Kids were greeted at the door with cheers and a drum-line to get the year started.
“We get the opportunity to educate and prepare our students for the future and there is no greater feeling,” Central High School principal, Anthony Holland Jr. said.
The band and cheerleaders also made a trip across the street, greeting middle school students on their first day. KS Superintendent, Dr. Jennifer Collier said this is an exciting tradition that lets students know they matter.
“We are excited about this first day welcoming our students back,” Dr. Collier said. “There are folks in the community that care, that want to see them do well.”
Elementary school students weren’t left out, getting a surprise appearance from Slugger at Whittier Elementary. Principal, Phillena Layne said any way to encourage students is important, especially on the first day.
“Sometimes it’s not easy to wake up and come to school, but when you see all of the people rallied here with smiles, hugs and high-fives, it gives you that boost of confidence,” Layne said.
KS is one of several districts on the Missouri side of the state line heading back to school on Monday. KCTV5 will continue back-to-school coverage throughout the rest of the week.
