LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) - City Commissioners in Lawrence, Kansas, decided on a site for a downtown transit station this week.

Lawrence Transit announced Friday the bus station hub for the city will be located in the 700 block of Vermont Street on the northeast corner of 8th and Vermont streets.

“We’re so appreciative of everyone who committed to this year-long process of public engagement. Hearing from our community every step of the way was critical to selecting a site,” said Felice Lavergne, Interim Director of Transit. “Downtown Station will offer a clean, safe, and comfortable experience for bus drivers and riders. We’re excited to work together with our project partners to design a space that will be an asset to our city.”

The design and construction process is expected to take place in 2025 and 2026, officials said.

Lawrence Transit said five of the 20 bus routes in Lawrence will continue to serve downtown Lawrence and the goal of the new station is to “improve comfort and convenience for bus riders.” The city hopes that goal will encourage more ridership now and in the future.

Officials said driver restrooms, individual bus bays, seating and wind protection, next departure signs and weather protection canopies are all expected to be featured in the downtown station.

Lawrence Transit also said security personnel is expected to be staffed from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday as part of the 2026 Transit Department operational budget.
