BONNER SPRINGS, Kan. (KCTV) - The Kansas Department of Transportation and Kansas municipalities across the metro are preparing for what could be the first big winter storm of the season.

“We’ve got crews around the metro that are preparing equipment, snowplows,” said Delaney Tholen, a Public Information Officer for KDOT. “Some folks were out earlier today treating ramps and bridges with salt brine ahead of the weather and will be doing the same tomorrow.”

Tholen says agencies and municipalities work together ahead of, during, and after the storms to clear the roads.

Johnson County shared photos of Public Works crews out Thursday putting brine on trouble spots in the county and setting up equipment to be ready for this weekend.

A county spokesperson noted that their crews will provide snow removal services for unincorporated areas of Johnson County and that city streets are managed by city crews.

“We do ask that motorists prepare for these weather events,” said Tholen. “Check out your car, check your windshield wipers and your lights. Make sure you have a phone charger, warm clothes, blankets, emergency s in your car.”

KDOT is also asking drivers to use caution around crews out on the roads.

“Give them extra time and space,” said Tholen. “Just because you can see the driver, doesn’t mean that the driver can see you. They have limited visibility. Do not try to them. So, slow down your speed, buckle up, and phones down.”

Tholen is also asking you to save two numbers in your phone: *47 for the Kansas Highway Patrol and *582 for when you’re on the Kansas Turnpike. If it is an emergency, she says call 911. She adds if you get stuck, stay in your car and help will come to you.

Tholen says if you can, stay at home, but if you have to get out, you can check KC Scout and KanDrive for road conditions and closures.
