KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - With temperatures plummeting and the possibility of historic snowfall totals in Kansas City, there’s a lot to be cautious about: driving safely, protecting your pets from the inclement weather, and keeping the pipes in your home from freezing.

Anytime temperatures drop below freezing (32° Fahrenheit), pipes are at risk of freezing. As temperatures are only expected to lower throughout the day, be sure you’re taking the proper precautions to spare your home from costly damages.

To help prevent your pipes from freezing...

  • Keep your cabinet doors open.
  • Leave the heat on, even when you’re not home.
  • Keep your faucets dripping or with a light stream so the water stays flowing.
  • Consider using products like a pipe sleeve or heat tape.

If your pipes do freeze...

  • Know where your emergency shutoff valve is located so you can use it.
  • Slowly thaw a frozen pipe with heat. A hairdryer works great.
  • Consider ing a plumber for help thawing.

“I have a lot of people say do a drippy faucet, let the water drip but some of these frigid temps, people are telling us 'I left it dripping and it still froze.' We’re telling people now just do a pencil lead stream. Moving water will not freeze, so if you could a pencil lead stream, more than a drip, that will keep it from freezing,” said Whelpley.(KCTV5)
