ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A St. Louis Metropolitan Police officer was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 70 Monday morning.

According to SLMPD, the officer was struck on I-70 near Shreve.

In a press conference Monday afternoon, St. Louis Police Chief Robert Tracy said the incident began as an investigation into a stolen vehicle. The Metro East Auto Theft Task Force tracked a Toyota Rav 4 that was carjacked in East St. Louis to the 4800 block of Cote Brillante. The suspects were then seen moving from the Toyota into an Acura that was later discovered to have also been stolen.

Officers spotted the Acura in the 5400 block of Queens and attempted to stop it. The car drove off and swerved towards an officer. Spike strips were successfully deployed, but the car continued driving.

Officers chased the car onto I-70, where it swerved and hit another vehicle.

After the crash, two suspects were taken into custody. A third suspect jumped over the center median into the express lanes. An officer held the suspect at gunpoint and climbed over the center median to take him into custody. While in the express lanes, both the suspect and officer were hit by a car.

The officer fired several shots into the air to alert other officers to his location. When officers arrived, they put a tourniquet on him and rushed him to the hospital. The officer was listed in stable condition after having surgery. Tuesday evening, police said a second surgery was successfully completed and the officer remains in critical condition.

Court documents later stated that the officer’s leg had to be partially amputated.

The suspect was taken to a different hospital and listed in critical, unstable condition.

On Monday afternoon, police released photos of a Cadillac CTS Sedan they sought in connection with the incident. They said the rear enger side was damaged, and a rear taillight may have been damaged.

On Monday evening, police said they found the Cadillac and identified a person of interest. They credited the public with locating the suspect vehicle.

The injured officer’s name has not been released, but police said he is 31 years old and has been with the City of St. Louis Police Department for nearly six years.

At a press conference on Monday, St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones asked for the community to pray for the officer.

Tuesday afternoon, St. Louis police announced that Mekhi Campbell and Frank Carr had been charged in connection with the incident.
