Kansas Citians rally against ‘privatization’ of postal service
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A large crowd of protesters gathered at Mill Creek Park Sunday in the United States Postal Service (USPS).
Hundreds were seen carrying signs, calling for the protection of the agency from privatization.
“Everyone should be heard. I’m here to be seen to let people know they don’t stand alone. I stand with them,” said one protester.
Crowds of postal workers, labor unions, and concerned Kansas Citians rallied to “save the USPS” as they claimed job security remains uncertain for millions.
“If the Trump istration gets what they want and moves the USPS to the Department of Commerce, that’s the first step toward privatization,” said National Association of Letter Carriers Representative Kevin Williams. That’s a move Williams fears will be detrimental for everyone who receives mail. “There are a lot of elderly people, a lot of disabled people, a lot of people in rural areas that don’t have much with the world that count on us to deliver mail and packages every day.”
Williams said he wants people to know the USPS does not use tax dollars to operate and is completely funded by postage and postal products. “This is an attempt to get their hands on money, the revenue generated by the postal service.”
Retired letter carrier Anita Franklin echoed Williams’ concerns. “Every company is saying we need more help, not less, and so when they’re talking about cuts, maybe look at some other way because we’re already short-handed.”
Franklin was a carrier for 36 years, sharing her ion for the job lives and worries the proposed changes will inevitably lead to a ripple of negative effects for customers and workers alike. “As a letter carrier, we think of our neighbors as our people, our customers, and we want the best for them.”
