By popular demand, Kansas is introducing ‘blackout-style’ license plates
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - The Kansas Department of Revenue is introducing a new license plate to its lineup, describing it as “sleek and stylish.”
Available on July 1, 2025, the “blackout-style” license has an all-black background with white letters. The top right has a white decal, mimicking the state’s shape.

Deann Williams, Director of the Kansas Division of Vehicles, said the department is excited to hear drivers’ requests and give them more options.
“The blackout plate design has proven to be very popular in surrounding states, and we’ve had many Kansans ask for it to come to Kansas,” said Williams. “We’ve heard them loud and clear, and we are very excited to bring this highly requested plate design to Kansas vehicles this year.”
The new plate can be purchased for standard enger vehicles and motorcycles at local county treasurers’ offices:
- One-time plate fee: $40
- Annual royalty fee: $50
- Optional personalization fee: $45.50
License plates have been a hot topic for Kansans throughout the last couple of years. Production on a new standard license plate was first vote for a replacement that is now in circulation.
