JAMESPORT, Mo. (KCTV) - A 5-year-old was air-lifted to a Kansas City hospital after he was thrown from the back of a horse, which perished, during a collision with a Jeep along a rural highway.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol indicates that around 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, emergency crews were called to the area of Missouri Highway 6 at 330th Rd., northeast of Jamesport, with reports of a crash.

When first responders arrived, they said they found a 5-year-old boy from Jamesport had been riding a horse as the pair headed south on 330th Rd. Meanwhile, an 18-year-old Gallatin girl had been driving a 2011 Jeep Wrangler east on the Highway.

State Troopers said the Jeep crashed into the horse as the 5-year-old was thrown from its back. The child was airlifted to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City with life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a safety device at the time of the incident.

Investigators noted that the Jeep’s driver was wearing a seatbelt and escaped the crash without injury. However, the Wrangler was totaled as a result.

State Troopers told KCTV5 that the horse died as a result of the crash. No further information has been released.
