KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Spire Energy has controlled a gas leak near the Crossroads area of Kansas City.

The Kansas City Fire Department stated on Thursday afternoon that firefighters responded to a natural gas line rupture in the area of 24th Street and Southwest Boulevard just before 1:30 p.m.

The fire department stated that a 4-inch line was struck during a digging operation, and emergency responders evacuated several structures in the area as a precaution.

Those evacuated were allowed back into structures about 3:30 p.m. as Spire worked on the repair.

Spire reported that the rupture was due to a third-party contractor digging for another utility.

A Spire spokesperson told KCTV5 that the area is “gas safe,” but the company would have crews on scene for another hour, as there was already construction in the area.
