Dozens gather to honor Memorial Day in Blue Springs as parade crosses through town
BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. (KCTV) - The Blue Springs community saw a brief pause in daily life on Main Street Monday to honor Memorial Day.
A parade of service , loved ones, and community leaders took off across town to highlight the ultimate sacrifice made as we soldiers through history on this day each Spring.
They marched with flags and chants, bringing attention to the soldiers lost. This parade ended at the Blue Springs Cemetery, where 200 flags atop 20-foot poles welcomed them to a ceremony. This was led by the Blue Springs Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Chapter 6603 and included an honor guard salute.
Ethan Newberry is a Boy Scout who helped put the event on, but he was part of the ceremony long before ing the scouts.
“My mom and my grandpa have been running this parade forever, since World War II stopped, so it is really important to all of us here,” Newberry said. “Oftentimes, I think we forget about how important the veterans are who serve our country and fought for our freedom and some of them gave up everything for us and I think that’s important that we how important it is.”
It was a somber ceremony ing the men and women who served. Nearly 80 years after it all started, this parade continues to honor those who gave their lives for our country.
“It’s just nice seeing the community getting involved, even just for one day,” Newberry said.
The 200 flags around the cemetery were left up until Monday afternoon.
