JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Governor Mike Kehoe is expected to announce plans for a special session Tuesday morning.

The governor previously said he planned to call a special session to discuss the possibility of providing tax breaks to keep the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs in Missouri.

A last-second idea to use tax revenue by the teams to finance bonds to build a new stadium didn’t have enough to get through the regular session earlier this month.

Kehoe is expected to set the date for the special session, as well as other details, during Tuesday’s announcement.

Kehoe is making it a priority to get an incentives package in front of the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. The two teams have been in talks with both Missouri and Kansas about wanting to upgrade their stadiums, a multi-billion dollar project, and Kansas is already presenting a competitive offer.

The teams have said they hope to announce plans about their future by the end of June. The teams also face a deadline in Kansas that is expected to expire in a matter of weeks.

Kansas Speaker of the House and Republican Wichita Representative Dan Hawkins said Kansas lawmakers are not anticipating extending that negotiation time.

There is likely to be a local component to any stadium incentives, and that could be more challenging than getting the lawmakers on board. A St. Louis University YouGov poll shows 70% of likely Missouri voters think the team should pay for their own stadium, rather than the government.
