Overland Park launching new program providing property tax relief

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) - A new program aimed at helping property owners opens June 1.

The Overland Park City Council approved a new program that will offer up to 75% of city property taxes back to residents who qualify.

To qualify property owners must:

  • Live in Overland Park
  • Live in and own the home
  • Be current on property taxes
  • Meet very low-income limits set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development

Applicants must also have paid their property taxes in full in both December 2024 and May 2025 before the City will provide the rebate.

The City will award rebates based on priority criteria, including:

  1. Income
    1. Household income at or below HUD’s very low-income or extremely low-income limits.
  2. Appraised value
    1. Homes that are appraised lower than Overland Park’s previous year’s average property value.
  3. Additional need
    1. Veterans, people with disabilities and senior citizens over the age of 65.
  4. Long-time residence
    1. Homeowners that have stayed at their current address for more than 15 years.
  5. Priority neighborhoods
    1. Homeowners living in one of the City’s risk-watch neighborhoods

APPLICATION AVAILABILITY

Applications will be available online starting June 1.

An application can also be picked up at the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall, during business hours Monday through Friday. City Hall is located at 8500 Santa Fe Drive.

  • Saturday, June 21
    • 11 s.m.-1 p.m.
    • Large Meeting Room at the Johnson County Blue Valley Library, 9000 W 151st St.
  • Tuesday, June 24
    • 5-7 p.m.
    • Central Conference Room 13 at the Johnson County Central Resource Library, 9875 W 87th St.
  • Monday, June 30
    • 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
    • Central Conference Room 13 at the Johnson County Central Resource Library, 9875 W 87th St.
  • Tuesdays from June 2-July 8
    • 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
    • Online by appointment

Applications are due by July 15.

Approved applicants will receive their rebates as checks in the mail by August 15.
