MARSHALL, Mo. (KCTV) - A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Missouri man accused of abusing a child before an argument led to a shot being fired.

Saline County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Tuesday, June 3, indicate that the arrest warrant was issued for Jonathan T. Montgomery Sr., 48, of Marshall.

A probable cause statement filed by the Marshall Police Department revealed that on Feb. 23, law enforcement officials were called to a nearby home with reports of a shooting. They were told a disturbance between Montgomery and another adult led to the incident.

Throughout the investigation, it was found that the day before the disturbance, Montgomery had become upset with a child over a bread bag. Ultimately, he picked the child up by the neck and threw him against the stairs.

Investigators noted that the victim told them Montgomery had told him to kill himself after the incident. Medical professionals later confirmed the victim sustained injuries consistent with physical abuse.

Law enforcement officials said a witness found out about the abuse and confronted Montgomery about it, which led to the shooting. He was stopped and questioned a short time after the incident and itted that he shot a gun at the ground outside a home that had several children inside.

Court documents revealed that Montgomery was not charged for the incident, however, until June 3, when charges of child abuse and unlawful use of a weapon were filed against him. If convicted, he could be sentenced to spend up to 11 years in prison.

Court records indicated that a warrant was issued for Montgomery’s arrest on Tuesday with the condition of a $15,000 bond attached. As of Thursday afternoon, he does not appear to have been taken into custody. A court appearance has not yet been set. No further information has been released.
