KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Hundreds gathered in downtown Kansas City Tuesday evening in solidarity with Los Angeles and against ICE raids and detention. Two groups, one beneath the Liberty Memorial and the other at the intersection of Southwest Blvd and Avenida Cesar E. Chavez, met up and marched in the Crossroads.

“I’m actually kind of happy that this is happening,” said Irene Castaneda. “I feel and from people I didn’t believe would us.”

Signs with strong messages like “hate won’t make us great”, “immigration built this nation”, and “hands off our neighbors” could be seen, along with American and Mexican flags. It was a peaceful protest for a cause that hit close to home for many.

“I work with immigrants,” said Jesse Sullinger. “Clients of mine are coming to me saying I don’t know what to do. I’m afraid to go to work. I just want to fight back and do whatever I can.”

Many say they found out about the protest through social media. Flyers said in both English and Spanish ‘ us in the Crossroads to stand with Los Angeles and demand an end to ICE raids and detentions. We will not stay silent as our friends, families, neighbors, and co-workers are ripped from our communities’.

“Whatever is going down in California, I mean, it’s sad,” said Lesley Castaneda. “It’s heartbreaking because at the end of the day, I’m from there and I don’t like what’s going on over there.”

The protest, while peaceful, did block a portion of the roads and disrupted traffic at times as protestors marched through the Crossroads. The KC Streetcar service was also periodically delayed due to the demonstration.
