Kansas City, Kansas Police ‘tackle’ youth violence
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) will host its fourth annual Tackling Conflict Together Football Camp on Saturday, June 14. The camp starts at 8 a.m. and ends at noon.
The camp is free to all boys and girls ages 7-18. KCKPD officials said kids will receive lunch, a shirt, and a goody bag.
KCKPD Police Chief Karl Oakman said conflict resolution continues to be a focus across the city, and the camp is one of many ways the department is getting in front of kids and having important conversations face-to-face.
“Children are looking for , leadership, and guidance,” Chief Oakman said. “This gives us an opportunity to teach them early how to make good decisions so they’re not making poor choices that will affect them the rest of their lives.”
According to KCK police, juvenile arrests are down compared to years past. Between 2017-2019, the department averaged 173 violent crime juvenile arrests. From 2022-2024, the average was 142 arrests.
